Jasmine Edwards
University:
University of Sussex
Placement:
Fat Fish Digital
Role:
Web Designer (SEPnet website)
"I could not recommend doing a placement enough. I also have a part-time role with the company whilst I finish my final year at Uni."
Describe a typical day:
I would arrive by 9 a.m, get organised for the day and begin working through my to-do list. Our team would have a brief meeting where we shared updates from the previous day, our plans for the current day, and discussed any challenges we might need help with.
My main project during the placement was to redesign and build the SEPnet site (the one you're viewing right now!) using a web-based design tool and website builder called Framer. As the project lead, I managed the entire website redesign process, from the initial planning stages to the final implementation. Using Framer I could focus more on the design and functionality of the site rather than the complexities of coding.
Why did you decide to do a placement?
I wanted to make the most of my summer by gaining valuable work experience that could benefit me after graduation. Instead of taking up a job in hospitality or retail, I chose to do a summer placement with a host company to get a clearer understanding of what career path I would like to pursue after university.
How do you think doing a placement has benefited you for the future?
Not only did I gain experience using a new software like Framer, I also learned what is was like to work in an office environment (which was a lot better than I expected!) and that was really valuable as well. I now also have a better idea of what I would like to do once I graduate.
What are your next steps?
I now work part-time for Fat Fish Digital while completing my final year at university. However, next summer, I plan to apply for another placement in a different sector to gain experience in other areas and explore what I might prefer after I graduate.

:
What impressed you about the placement student you hosted, and would you host again?
"We had high expectations based on our initial interview with Jasmine and what the team at SEPnet had told us about her, but we were completely blown away by her work ethic, professionalism, and problem-solving abilities. From day one, Jasmine committed to mastering a program she had never used before, and she approached every challenge with a level of patience and reason far beyond her years of experience. She has now become an indispensable part of the Fat Fish Digital team. We look forward to hosting other SEPnet students in the future."
