THE VALUE OF WORK EXPERIENCE

THE VALUE OF WORK EXPERIENCE

Max Branch

University:

University of Hertfordshire

Placement:

Telespazio

Role:

Systems Engineer

"The placement has equipped me with a broad range of transferrable skills."

Describe a typical day:

A typical day would vary dependant on what project(s) I was working on - which seems to be the same for most Systems Engineers, intern or not. Each day I would log onto my laptop, reply to any Teams messages or Emails and then begin project work. This could include various tasks programming in MATLAB or C for my 5G NTN project, it could include researching competitors who make similar payload products to TPZ and writing a supporting document for my manager - or this work could include more hands on tasks in the lab such as assembling components for an Optical Laser demonstration.

Why did you decide to do a placement?

I decided to do a placement because I wanted to get some experience in the industry I thought I wanted to go into and to see what jobs are out there for me after graduation and what my potential career path may look like. I also wanted to reinforce the experience on my CV as I know that having past experience is the biggest asset employers look for when hiring.

Would you recommend doing a placement?

Absolutely. Going into the placement I had a very open mind and was willing to accept that there would be parts of the job I loved, and parts not so much. But this is what made the placement so successful for me because not only was I gaining relevant work experience, I was learning what things I did and didn't enjoy. On top of that I was making friends, earning a salary, and refreshing my routine after two years of study already. There are no downsides to taking a placement.

How do you think doing a placement has benefited you for the future?

It has given me a broad range of transferable skills, allowed me to work on numerous projects that I would not have done in my 3 year degree, make industry contacts with people who I know I want to work with in the future, given me insight into what employers look for and it will help me stand out in future job applications. But most of all, when my time at University ends I know my options, I know what pathway I can take - and I know what it takes to get me there.

What are your next steps?

My next steps are to work hard to finish my 3rd year of University and enjoy the subjects in which I am studying. Once that is done I will assess my options from there and see what suits me best. Whether I choose to stay on and complete my MPhys, or if I choose to go into industry, I know I will be well equipped now that I have placement experience under my belt.
